As a former street cop I had the difficult duty to investigate crimes where innocent, defenseless citizens suddenly became victims of violence. People who suffered traumatic circumstances, severe injuries, even death. People whose lives were instantly and permanently changed, not to mention the emotional pain and suffering endured by their families and friends.
As ordinary citizens you and I still face the same threat of criminal violence today, possibly even more so. While we all want to believe we're safe, the potential for falling victim to violence may be worse now than ever before. Crime rates are on the rise, and criminals are more violent and more brazen. Creating more laws or tying the hands of law abiding citizens will NOT stop those inclined to inflict suffering on others; to the contrary it empowers them.
There is no worse feeling than realizing you are overwhelmed when you are violently attacked. Perhaps you thought it would never happen to you, or perhaps you share the misguided belief that you can just dial 911 and a cop will suddenly appear to protect you. But the only thing that happens suddenly is your worst fears becoming realities, and you find yourself in a situation where the thing you thought would never happen to you is happening right now.
If you're trained and ready, the attacker will not find a sheep cowering in the corner, begging for mercy. Instead he will find a lion ready to pounce; a person with the competence, confidence and determination to defend what he loves.
When I was in law enforcement we kept our training secret, so our tactics could not be learned or countered by the wrong people. There are some who think I'm out of line for teaching civilians these advanced tactics, but I wholeheartedly disagree. You not only have the right to defend yourself, but with police response times of 10-20 minutes nationally, you may be the only person who can stop a violent attack before your assailant can inflict severe injuries or death.
